VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
Paper was always a key element used throughout the story to convey an impermanence and fragility of the human characters that contrasts with the organic, painterly animals and environments.

PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT
The project began as a 2D cutout animated film with hand painted multi-layered 2D backgrounds. However, as the story evolved it became clear that a majority of the film would have to be realized using a fully 3D pipeline.

ANIMATION TOOLS
This project used every trick in the 3D production handbook. When we couldn't find a technique we needed, we developed our own. We used our custom plugin PSDto3D extensively to convert hand painted illustrations into 3D assets for production.

PRODUCTION + POST
It was critical that we develop techniques to blend CG Paper puppets, dynamic painterly 3D forests, classical 2D animation and intricately hand-painted backgrounds together in a way that did not distract from the film’s storytelling.
